Garden Bloggers Bloom Day~April 2016~Central Florida

Central Florida is still experiencing spring like weather, which is not always our norm in April.  We often go straight from winter, to summer heat and humidity, in a blink of an eye.  I'm enjoying it while it lasts!  It's bloom day, so here's what's blooming...

'Night Beacon', Daylily.

Another early blooming Daylily, 'Challenger'.

This is an old, hardy Amaryllis...I've always known it as 'Johnson's' Amaryllis, but some refer to it as 'St. Joseph's Lily'.  This is one of the South's pass-along plants.

Another pass-along plant, this pink Crinum has been blooming awhile, and will continue for a few more weeks.  This plant has become hard to find, with the loss of our small, local nurseries.

Roses and Salvia

Clematis are just beginning to bloom...

This one, a little ahead of the rest...

Serissa foetida, with it's diminutive flower and leaves is a dainty shrub.

Passion Flower

A common succulent, Ghost Plant.

Black-Eyed Susan Vine is making it's return.

Confederate Jasmine blooms have begun to perfume the air with their lovely scent.

Many plants in my gardens are just beginning to show color...like these French Hydrangeas.

'Red Cascade' Rose is also just beginning...

First blooms in 'Black and Blue' Sage

Also the first of many Zinnias to bloom...

Gaura lindheimeri, pink, which I haven't planted in three years!  I have about a dozen white ones, which return each year, but the pinks never over wintered for me.  Well, one finally returned...

English Dogwood, or Mock Orange.  I've had these nearly thirty years, but over time they've become too shaded.  Next winter, I'll dig some clumps out and relocate them to a sunnier area.

Just a bud, but one I look forward to every spring, Agapanthus, Lily-Of-The-Nile, by any name...beautiful.

Happy GBBD to all...enjoy spring, and if you'd like to see more blooms visit Carol at May Dreams Gardens.

  3. Thanks Cody...you'll do it. You're on the right track rooting roses. My daylilies and agapanthus have been divided over and over through the years, and I've always got pots sitting around with something rooting in them.

    1. I have a succulent that LOOKS just like the ghost plant, BUT does not have any flowers growing off of it. I would like to get ahold of a agriculturist connecting w/ 'WORLD OF SUCCULENTS', but I have had NO success. Can you or anybody who knows how to get through share w/ me this information, I'd be very grateful and appreciative - PLZ HELP!

    2. Sorry, I don't have any info on the site that you wanted. The ghost plants shown get a half day of sun and bloom nearly all summer. I do have some in more shaded areas that don't bloom as well. Good luck, and thanks for visiting.

  6. I definitely share your fondness for old-fashioned plants and pass-along plants--they add so much charm and character to the garden and really help establish a strong sense of place. You have a great collection!

Have you read Passalong Plants by Steve Bender and Felder Rushing? If you haven't, I really recommend it. It's a lot of fun.

Also, have you read this article on crinum lilies? http://www.southernliving.com/home-garden/gardens/hot-country-lilies-captivate-gardeners. I just love it.

  7. Oh yes, Leslie I just love that sense of continuity you get when growing plants with a past. I haven't read the book, but I'm taking note of it. I did just read the article on crinums, loved it, and thank you for letting me know about it. _Janice

  8. It's so lovely Janice to see all the beautiful plants you have blooming in your garden. Spring has been very kind to us hasn't it this year? Your garden is certainly enjoying it! I really love the Night Beacon Daylily - It is a really unusual color and gorgeous too. Of course I love your Pink Crinum and it is in such a perfect place next to your white fence. Thank you for sharing your piece of paradise!
